The Industry Scientific Research Laboratory for Electrification and Automation of Railway Transport (ISRL for EA of RT) was established in 1982 by an order of the Ministers of Transport and National Education. The laboratory was granted faculty status and was provided with the material base and premises of the problem group on automation, telemechanics, and communications in railway transport from the Department of Communication Engineering, where the educational process for the eponymous profile is conducted. Prof. Dr. Sc. Hristo Angelov Hristov was elected as the head of the laboratory. It was established in connection with the execution of tasks of interest to BDZ, and during its existence, the team has developed and implemented over 40 scientific research tasks. The most significant among them are related to the creation of a computer dispatch control system for the railway hub in Gorna Oryahovitsa and the first computer station interlocking in Bulgaria at Brigadir station. With funds allocated by the Ministry of Transport in the amount of 200,000 USD, equipment and furnishings were purchased to improve the educational process for the profile of automation, telemechanics, and communications in transport and to support the laboratory's work on executed contracts. Over 20 full-time staff members (engineers, research associates, one senior research associate, technicians) and over 11 lecturers from the Department of Communication Engineering (assistants, associate professors, professors, technicians) have worked in the laboratory. Over 100 diploma theses and 8 dissertations have been written on the developed topics. Practical sessions for students from the Departments of Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Technology and Management of Railway Transport have been conducted in the laboratory. In recent years, the laboratory team has participated in the development of international projects – the 'Safety Engineering' part, related to the largest tenders of BDZ – 'Construction of a train movement control system (ETCS) on the Plovdiv – Burgas section', 'Reconstruction and modernization of the Plovdiv – Svilengrad section', 'Construction of Danube Bridge 2 Vidin – Calafat'. Since 2006, the laboratory has had department status under the Department of Electronic Production Technology, now 'Technologies and Management of Communication Systems'.
